ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Angelica Orquin AKA “Selah viee” is a Filipino “New Contemporary “ artist using graphic-like portraits girls to create visual narratives.

Selah represents a vast experiences inspired by representation human nature through which she uses vibrant and distinctive color combinations to contrast the concept of humanity itself.

Selah's work combines her experience as a street artist, with her upbringing in urban environments, love of anime and kawaii concepts and street culture, Exploring themes of perspective experiences, psychological aspects, and adventure through paintings and street art.

In her first solo exhibition titled Kawaii Delights, Selah shows us what she’s made of: an artist who clearly knows her identity with an assuredness like hard candy, sweet and solid.

Kawaii Delights delivers on its promise. In Japanese, kawaii literally translates to “acceptable for affection” or “possible to love.” It encompasses meanings like “cute,” “adorable,” “sweet,” “precious,” “pretty,” “endearing,” “darling,” and even “little.” Its usage in Japanese extends to describing anything from fashion to pets, from pastry to grandparents. (Kotaku, The Meaning of Kawaii) With this context in mind, we can view Selah’s art beyond the cuteness. What is possible to love nowadays? Kawaii Delights on the surface captures our fascination with adorable wide-eyed creatures, with muted pastels, with child-like portraits of daydreaming in solitude. There is always a shade of distance; a storm brewing underneath. Selah’s art is self-aware; shy but confrontational.

According to the artist, Kawaii Delights draws inspiration from Heironymus Bosch’s Earthly Delights, portraying the essence of human nature in a lively scenic but chaotic setting. Each painting captures the seven ominous human traits—pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, and sloth—within a seemingly cute aesthetic. Despite their “kawaii” appearance, these representations convey the undeniable beauty and havoc inherent in human nature. Selah invites us to recognize aspects of ourselves in her portrayal of human existence.

Angelica Orquin, aka ‘Selah viee,’ is a Filipino ‘ New Contemporary artist known for graphic-like portraits depicting visual storytelling. Her artist name, inspired by ‘c’est la vie,’ reflects her exploration of life’s experiences. Selah blends street art, urban upbringing, anime, and kawaii concepts, using diverse color combinations to explore human nature and themes like perspective, psychology, and adventure in her paintings and street art.
